Symbian in Motion: Adaptxt by Keypoint Technologies

  • symbianaddict · 2 years ago
looks awesome zach. i made a post about it on my new blog, diverting the news back to your site of course.

your always on top of new apps, thanks for the great review.
  • Stefan Constantinescu · 2 years ago
wtf, i asked the PR guy to shoot me an email when this application came out so I could test it on my device and he totally shafts me.
  • frispee · 2 years ago
quick question: will it work with other languages too?
  • zach · 2 years ago
@symbianaddict Thanks very much and the blog is looking great!

@Stefan Shoot him an email - he might be waiting until the release later this week to get in touch with you.

@frispee Thank you for asking this question as I completely forgot to mention supported languages!

English (US and UK), Finnish, Swedish, French, German, Spanish, Italian

There are also some more in the pipeline if you don't see your native language listed.

Holly sh*t, that's one app I'm going to buy right away.
I hope the bugs will be ironed out by release time and they'll choose better icons: the 'Options' screen icons are pretty ugly at the moment, and do not match with Nokia's default icons, kinda breaking UI consistency IMHO....
  • Reda · 2 years ago
Really really nice! Do you know what the limit of the database size is and if the app slows down with time...

    Thanx for the preview!
  • zach · 2 years ago
@merlin I think that bug fixes will likely wait until the next build as the version I'm testing will be the release. "Bugs" is probably not the proper term for just about all of the issues though - interaction with third-party apps is a tricky because it would be impossible for Adaptxt to test and accommodate compatibility with every app.

@Reda These are both excellent questions! To be perfectly honest, I can't answer either! :)

I haven't been using the app nearly long enough to build a sizable db that would affect operation. I imagine it would have to be several thousand entries to make a noticeable difference. I'm using an N95-3 though and I'm sure it can vary by device.

Not sure about the size limit either. I'll bring these questions to the developer's attention and ask them to either chime in here or contact me with answers. :)

Off topic but what theme is shown in the screen shots? It looks very appealing. Thanks.
  • quack · 2 years ago
This application looks incredibly useful and should save a hell of a lot of time typing out those long words in emails and SMSes - very similar to a function Motorola phones have had for ages.

I have just one question though, does Adaptxt work within other applications, such as Windows Live Messenger? If so, this would be a killer app for anyone.
  • aero9 · 2 years ago
    hi,
very nice app, cant wait for the release.

btw, what theme is that? ;->
  • zach · 2 years ago
@quack Thanks for the comment. :) As I mentioned above, app compatibility is a tricky topic. I've tested a bunch (not Win Live Messenger though) and it works with some and not with others. For example, it works PERFECTLY in SMS Chat, but Jaiku Mobile won't even open if Adaptxt is enabled!

Now that initial development is complete, Adaptxt will be looking at compatibility with certain key apps but of course they can never address all of the programming issues in every app out there...

@LondoJowo @aero9 The theme pictured above is called Blue Satin. :)
  • LondoJowo · 2 years ago
Thanks :-) Just wanted to let those who own E90's, the Blue Satin theme works even though Handango says it's not compatible.
  • zach · 2 years ago
Ah thanks for the heads up LondoJowo - did you grab the E61i/E61/E62 version or the QVGA portrait version? My guess is the first one would look a bit nicer...
  • zach · 2 years ago
    @Reda Answers have arrived!

In the current version, user additions (new words, not pattern recognition) are limited to 1,000. Note that the base dictionary contains over 40,000 words.

This also answers your question about app performance - I doubt another 1,000 would ever have an affect on a db that's already packing 40,000+. ;)
  • Reda · 2 years ago
    Thanks Zach!
  • LondoJowo · 2 years ago
I got the QVGA Portrait version. The only thing that's different on the internal screen is the signal and battery status. They are displayed using the default status (triangular). This the first 3rd party theme I've tried that doesn't have a time lag when swapping between screens. That said I'm very happy with this awesome theme. :-)

This might be just the trial version I installed, but I notice my quick lock doesn't work anymore when Adaptxt is enabled. i.e. left key + * no longer locks my keypad
  • symbianaddict · 2 years ago
is this out yet. or even the beta or trial. am i missing something.
  • Darren · 2 years ago
    Great review, and great application.
Yeah the lock feature is disabled (left key + *) on my N73 too. minor bug to a great piece of programming all round.

Cant understand why the likes of Adaptxt and TextQuick are not built into S60 operating level.

    Best regards from Belfast.
    Darren.
  • zach · 2 years ago
@symbianaddict It was released a few days after this review. Check the note in the last line of the review for a link.

@Darren Thanks so much for the kind words! Maybe one of the freeware locking apps might help. Check out Mr Lock. :)
  • Qasim · 2 years ago
I need to try this, but judging by the screenshots, it looks like this works alot like Sony Ericsson's T9 - what with the drop-down list of recommendations and most frequently used words being on top.
  • zach · 2 years ago
Definitely check it out Qasim - did you watch the video linked above? I typed an entire sentence by only pressing two letters and the the d-pad!! I don't think an SE can do that... ;)
  • John · 2 years ago
    hi guys

i just installed Adaptex on my N95, but when i try to run OperaMini 4 , and go to "Options -> Enter Address" , OperaMini 4 crashes without warning or error message! this happens when Adaptex is enabled, if i disable adaptex and try to do "options -> Enter Address" , operaMini works fine then.

anyone else has the same issue, please email them regarding it so they put some effort into fixing it sooner. thanx
  • zach · 2 years ago
I'm not Opera user but it definitely sounds like a conflict. Definitely shoot an email to their support team so they can get working on it!
  • merlin · 2 years ago
I have downloaded the trial version, but as opposed at your note Zach, the app only comes with English dictionnary, no other language is available at the moment :-(.

And there's one ANNOYING BUG with this initial version: it doesn't work well with dark themes. Try opening the symbols window while writina a message (with the * key) and you'll see that the symbols are black on a dark background: they are just unreadable. I notice this with Psiloc Reflect Theme, don't know if the bug s present with all dark themes.

Can you tell the guys at Keypoint to pay attention to this bug Zach ?
At this point, no French dictionnary plus that bug, the app is just no use for me...:-(
  • zach · 2 years ago
@merlin I have already advised them of the dark theme bug and they should be working on it for the next build. Many developers make this mistake when first entering the S60 v3 space because themes are handled very differently from most other platforms.

As for the dictionaries, shoot them an email. Perhaps you need to download from a different location to get the alternative dictionaries.

    Hi GUYS

i recnetly posted on how how Adaptxt causes Opera Mini 4 to crash on N95 as soon as i try to do in Opera Mini 4 (Options -> Enter Address), then opera Mini crashes immediately with Adaptxt enabled.
This is new, and it's to do with SkyeQuikey and Adaptxt. basically when Adaptxt is enabled on my N95, SkyeQuikey no longer works. Normally SkyeQuikey sits in background, hidden in idle screen, and when you press some keypad number it find matching contacts, programs...etc. but with Adaptxt enabled,SkyeQuikey is simply in freeze mode, pressing keypad number does not except hide the right and left selection keys operations title (eg, Messaging . Profile) and that's it. When adaptxt is disabled, SkyeQuikey works as expected. I've reported both of the issues, no replies from them yet.
  • merlin · 2 years ago
I contacted the Keypoint guys about the other languages but they are not responding.
Zach, did you get a trial version with French dictionnary inside ? If yes, could you post a link here please ? I fear the file I need won't be available before the trial period ends, and I would be unable to test it before buying...
  • zach · 2 years ago
@merlin The version I have only has English unfortunately. They should get back to you soon and I wouldn't worry about the trial expiring. I'm sure they'll find a way to help you. I'll shoot them an email in the morning to make sure they're watching this space.

@john Yes the SkyeQuiKey issue is one that I reported to them during beta testing so rest assured they're working on it.
  • merlin · 2 years ago
They just replied this morning, and what a dissapointing reply: the french and othe languages won't be available until a few MONTHS !!

C'mon guys, you've just screwed my morning up...
  • zach · 2 years ago
@merlin I'm really sorry to hear that! That definitely contradicts the info that I was given... :(
  • merlin · 1 year ago
S6O version of Adaptxt isn't available anymore, any news of what going on "anybody" (understand Zach ;-)) ?
  • zach · 1 year ago
@merlin It has been pulled temporarily. I don't know how much detail I can share yet but trust me, you'll like what they're doing... :)
  • merlin · 1 year ago
    Talk about teasing...:-D
  • merlin · 1 year ago
Time's going on...any shareable news for this little (and probably great) piece of software ?
  • zach · 1 year ago
    Soon my friend, soon. :)
  • Adam · 1 year ago
Any word on the re-release of teh S60 version of Adaptxt?
  • Zach · 1 year ago
Nothing yet unfortunately. :( I'll ping them today and see how things are going...
  • Ian · 1 year ago
Well into Feb-08 and still no s60v3 version available for purchase.

Any clues what's going on and/or when the product might actually appear ?
  • Zach · 1 year ago
Nothing yet on this one Ian - I'll let you know as soon as I hear anything though.
  • Arne · 1 year ago
But does it really matter which languages that are supported, if you can "learn" it a new language? It will take some time, yes, but still..

I write norwegian, but sometimes I write a few words in english.. The norwegian word "tid" (meaning "time") is on the same buttons as "the".. So if I've written "tid" 4 times and "the" 3 times, "tid" will be suggested first? And if I then write "the" two more times, "the" will be suggested first instead.. Am I right?

If that is correct, this application fits me perfect!! My name "Arne" is by default norwegian T9 suggested after "åpne" (open) and "brød" (bread) - and I write "Arne" WAY more often than "åpne" or "brød"..
  • Zach · 1 year ago
To be honest, I'm not quite sure how that app will respond to different languages, especially since it is in the midst of being completely reworked for S60. With the English version that I currently use, it will of course learn new words that you add - and how you use them - but I'm not sure how it will deal with non-English characters in the English version. As we get closer to a public release I think that would be a great question to send to the developer directly.
  • Ian · 1 year ago
Any news on the S60v3 version via the backdoor - their web-site is unpolluted by anthing resembling information despite the "Symbian" splash on the front page and another month slipping by.
  • Ian · 1 year ago
...And there goes Q1 '08. Still nothing.
  • Zach · 1 year ago
It indeed has been a while guys, but the wait is almost over! I'll have [awesome] news for you in the next few days...
  • Arne · 1 year ago
i just downloaded a 7 day trial from their website!! it also says that it can be extended to 90 days trial (on the website), but i haven't got that to work..
  • Arne · 1 year ago
and that is serious, no april fools..

    http://www.adaptxt.com/?node_id=3.5.1.2&id=62

and click on the 7 day trial button to the left, it will let you download a signed .sis-file.. :)
  • Ian · 1 year ago
    Downloaded - problems straight away:

On the options screen below each icon, and on the suggestion box when typing - all text is corrupted and just shows as little square boxes.

Hopefully a simple font fix is all that's needed.
  • Tom · 1 year ago
Same problem with the fonts. Anyone has a fix?
  • Arne · 1 year ago
No font problems on my E65 - but I wasn't completely satisfied..

    * the english dictionary can't be disabled (not that cool when I'm writing norwegian based on the 1000 custom words)
    * when restarting the phone, it doesn't remember that I want the custom words-list to be prioritised above the english dictionary
    * when entering words manually, the norwegian characters æøå isn't availible (normally it's abc2æå and mno6ø)
    * it makes the phone way much slower
