Symbian in Motion: Best Taskman v2.01 by SmartphoneWare

  • gardel · 2 years ago
    Fantastic . . . just what's needed. But what did you do to get it to work? I installed it on an E61i (after uninstalling Handy Taskman), and it shows up in the Installation folder. But when I select Taskman, the screen goes blank for a split second, and returns to the installation folder. Is there a key stroke combo that needs to be entered>

    Wow looks like one heck of an app!
  • Abhishta Paranjpe · 2 years ago
    Holy multitasking batman!! That's awesome!!

    How much ram does it eat up?
  • zach · 2 years ago
    @gardel

    Try removing it and reinstalling (on phone memory, not MMC) - it works perfectly on my E61i so there's no reason it shouldn't work for you.

    @Abhishta

    Surprisingly, not much at all! :)

    @zach:

    Tried every possible combination of reinstall/reboot/etc. I can think off, all with the same effect. I've written the folks at Best and will report back.
  • Barmal · 2 years ago
    I have exactly the same problem like Gardel and @zach. I can install best Taskman on my Nokia E70 but can't run it.
  • Stelios · 2 years ago
    Same on my E61i; will not start. Now I did have an older version trial that I forgot about but removing them both did not help.
  • zach · 2 years ago
    OK guys, SmartphoneWare knows about this post and I'm sure they will see the comments so hopefully all will be worked out. Make sure that you are installing the app to your phone memory (not MMC) when you try it.

    Also make sure that you leave the app with "Hide" and not exit if you want it to keep operating.

    @Stelios

    This is very odd because it works fine on my E61i. What firmware version do you have?
  • Stelios · 2 years ago
    @Zach:

    I am running 1.0633.86.02, it is a Buy.com-it sourced US version.
  • zach · 2 years ago
    (removed firmware version above as I put the fw from my instead of E61i)

    Well I'm running ...22.05 which is older so it doesn't look like a firmware issue.

    I would definitely open a dialog with SmartphoneWare (support@smartphoneware.com) and they will help you to get it working.

    I have an N75 and the same thing is happening to me as is gardel. Installs to phone memory fine, try to run it, appears it's going to launch and then closes about one or two seconds later. Never see any Taskman screens at all. WEIRD!
  • Flo · 2 years ago
    the app installed fine on my e61i. the only issue i have is that no matter what hotkeys i define for the quick start menu, using the defined hotkeys makes the app close.

    any hints? experienced the same?
  • Juan · 2 years ago
    Same problem with my N80ie, I can bet a few bucks that every people with this problem have their phones in other languajes that english (spanish in my case). Google it, there are reports that this app have a bug and won´t startup in non english versions.
  • Guest · 2 years ago
    Seems like a really neat application. However Quick Start doesn't work on my Nokia E50. Everytime I try to use it TaskMan shuts down. The main program and Switcher are working nicely with the same hotkeys so the problem isn't at least key related.

    Has anyone got the Quick Start to work on an E50?
  • Guest · 2 years ago
    Sorry - if I confused with the previous post. The quick start does work on my E50 - I removed half of my quick start apps and have now only seven in the list. Maybe there is a max number of apps you can have in the list...
  • wouter · 2 years ago
    Hi,
    I had the same problem with the quick start on my E61.
    Someone else found the culprit: If there is a Java app. in the quick start list, activating quick start will crash Best Taskman.
    For now just remove the Java application (in my case Opera Mini) from the quick start list and you'll be fine.
    Wouter
  • Guest · 2 years ago
    Thanks for the help, since in the mean time I added Widsets to the list and removed several others but the program kept crashing. Now is everything working fine (although without Gmail and Widsets :( ).
  • Guest · 2 years ago
    Sorry for continuing with the spamming, but although now I can replace symbian apps with java apps in the standby screen, all of them show the default java icon (a blue box). I tried to search on this on the net, but it seems that it's only possible to change this through programming (i.e. too difficult for me). Is this true?

    A noticed that the author of this site has a quick launch icon of Gmail in the standby screen... How did you do it?
  • Abul · 2 years ago
    Nice, me likes! ^__^

    @ALL

    Great comments guys - keep the reports coming because they will be very helpful to SmartphoneWare in getting the app fixed for us! Big thanks to Wouter for finding and posting that java apps appear to be the culprit in most cases. I'll add a note to the original post.

    @Tuomas

    The icon you refer to in my active standby is actually and app called GSync rather than the Gmail java app. You can change the icons for java games fairly easily but you are limited to bitmap icons (native s60 apps use scalable icons) so they won't help much.

    Did I ever post how to change java app icons here? I might not have in which case google will help you find tons of guides. Basically you just open the jar file with an archiver (WinZip, WinRar, etc) find the icon file (usually named "icon.png" or "icon.gif" etc), and replace it with whatever new icon you want (new icon should have the exact same name and be in the same format).

    FYI for all - I have spoken to SmartphoneWare and they are closely monitoring this page. They deeply appreciate all of your comments and are working hard to fix the issues that you guys have come across.

    It sounds like they already have several of the issues ironed out and once they can take care of the rest and get through the "Berlin Wall" that Symbian Signed is becoming (those are my words of course, not SmartphoneWare's :) ) a new version will be released and I'll be sure to post an update here on SiMo.

    Thanks guys!

    Official repply from SmartphoneWare:

    Dear Juan,

    Thank you for yuor feedback. We're investigating this issue right now because a number of users have it and will notify you as soon as it is solved. Some more info from you could prove helpful:

    Did you install into phone memory or into MMC? Tried both variants?

    Best regards,
    Victoria Alaya

    And yes, I tried both phone memory and memory card with no luck.
    Just FYI.

    Great review. This is my first time coming across this site. I'm glad I found a place that reviews many apps with screenshots as I don't have to demo every app to see what it's like. I hope you keep it up

    Mind if I ask you where I could get that theme?
  • zach · 2 years ago
    Thanks for you kind words JwY :)

    The theme pictured above is called MacBlue and oddly enough I can't find a download link right now. I know I have it on my laptop though so I'll upload it tomorrow from my office and post a link here.
  • zach · 2 years ago
    Sorry for the delay. Here's a link to the theme pictured above. It's called MacBlue by Benjamin31 and it's definitely one of my favorites!

    Please note that the certificate is expired and I don't have time to renew it right now so just set your date to 2006 when you install it.
  • JwY · 2 years ago
    Thanks for taking the time to find it and upload it. I look forward to reading your future articles.

    Just a comment, I wish to thanks Smartphoneware Support (very especially to Victoria Alaya), I must say, by far the best support team that I remembered.
    They make to test versions of the application for me trying to isolate the problem, we are in contact trying to solve the issue.
    Regards and keep the good work Smartphoneware.
  • zach · 2 years ago
    @Juan

    Thank you very much for your comment. I've had similar experiences with SmartphoneWare's support team and I think that it's very important to let other users know when a company offers top-notch support!

    I hope that Victoria helps you to resolve your issue promptly and let us know how it goes!
  • Juan · 2 years ago
    SmartphoneWare sent to me a developer (I guess) version of Best Taskman (v. 2.02), in my N80ie, it displays two messages (debugger messages I suppose), but after that the app work just fine. I think that the problem is about different languages codes, in the last message from Victoria (today) informed that a new version will go live with the corrections and feedback from users after the signed process.

    Regards,

    this is for smartphoneware

    guys looks like u hav a good support team

    but ur testing team sucks

    i m myself a software developer (not mobile software though) and most of the bugs that hav come up so far(listed above) shud hav been caught during system testing(basically second leg of testing)

    well if such a bugged software is released, its going to be very difficult for u to challenge ur competitors , remember the more features u provide, the more ur testing increases exponentially
  • alyson · 2 years ago
    thought I'd chime in. I have the same problem on my e61i as described above; installed fine, but flashes and won't open. English lang version on phone memory only. I had just removed y-tasks and wondering if there are some files left from that install causing the problem. I had weeks ago installed and let expire a trial of handy taskman.
  • zach · 2 years ago
    Yeah I would definitely shoot a quick note to Smartphoneware support on this one. What else do you have running on your phone in the background? There can be really weird conflicts that you might not even realize - for example I can't open X-plore on my N95 or E61i when Jaiku is running, EVER! You wouldn't think that those two apps would conflict because they seemingly have no similar operations but something about Jaiku just doesn't play nicely with Jaiku...
  • mJ · 2 years ago
    hey, i've installed it too on my n91 phone memory.. flashes for a split second and then doesn't do anything.. hmm.. same problem as the others eh?
  • zach · 2 years ago
    Odd - definitely shoot an email to their support and they should respond pretty quickly.
  • TEDi · 2 years ago
    a NO go with a n80ie here either, tried installing on phone memory then back on mem card, tried like 10 times - still NO luck. Install runs just fine, but when I try to launch, the screen flashes like being refreshed and then nada... No java appl running in background/standby mode.
  • zach · 2 years ago
    Yeah this is the type of problem that you definitely want to take to their support department. They're very responsive so just shoot them an email. :)
  • symbianaddict · 2 years ago
    hey zach one of my readers is having the same problem with there n95-3. click on the app, and it doesn't launch. do you run it on your n95?
  • zach · 2 years ago
    I honestly haven't tried it since changing devices - a few devices back. lol I'll see if I have time to give it a try in the next few days (US holiday).
  • merlin · 1 year ago
    Hello Zach !!
    I think I've got your next subject ready for you to write about: Handy Taskman has been brought to v2.0 !!
    Got to check this one out !!
  • zach · 1 year ago
    Thanks for the heads up merlin! I'll definitely have to check it out - reading the short change log right now...
  • Alon · 1 year ago
    I am being told that the issue related to TaskMan not starting on certain model phones may be related to a firmware issue. SmartphoneWare is aware of a workaround and preparing a fix. I have the latest firmware on my n95-3 (11.2.009) and was told it may take "several weeks" for a fix?
  • zach · 1 year ago
    Rest assured that they'll get it done - they have a great team of developers who are working hard on the issue I'm sure.
  • iori · 1 year ago
    Now is already March 2008... and they still haven't fix this problem??? My phone is Nokia n82 and i have the same problem as well.. it flickers but won't start after install... installed in phone memory...
