N800 Has Arrived from WOM World!

Started by Zach · 10 months ago

Things have been pretty busy here on SiMo and they just got busier! They say “when it rains, it pours” and yesterday a new gadget found its way to my office courtesy of WOM World…

The N800 is a device that I have always been very skeptical about. Several ... Continue reading »

  • I had a little play with one a while back in a PC World over here in the UK, I found myself thinking that without an unsecured Wifi connection in the area to actually test the browsing functions of the Tablet, I realised that I wasnt actually able to use it to its full potential. However that didnt stop me from looking up online for more information on this tablet and its features when I got back home.

From looking it up on google I vaguely remember the Tablet being sold alongside a S60 mobile and that it was marketed that with the two devices used together there was no boundries the devices couldnt handle.

This led me to think if this related to a possible pairing of the two devices, meaning the Tablet could use the S60 phone for its data connections using Bluetooth to transmit the information between them or if it related to the two devices being able to cover a majority of bases that a roadwarrior or travelling business man would look for within the devices alone.

I dont know, it might just be my own imagination, but as you've got one it would be worth seeing if it is possible to do the above pairing in some way.

  • Oh no, you're absolutely correct Da22a. The N800 is intended to be tethered to an S60 to make use of its data channels. Here in the US that's about the only way I can use it since WiFi hotspots aren't prevalent at all in my area. Thankfully I have 3G now - I don't think I could handle this thing with an EDGE connection...
  • Cheers for the quick reply, my next question would be can it handle youtube?

And if it can handle stored video, what formats can it handle?

    Da22a
  • Well I just tested the full youtube site and while it
does work, it's a bit slow. The mobile site might work
    a bit better.

As for video, it can handle plenty of formats. 3GP,
AVI, H.263, MPEG-1, MPEG-4, RV (Real Video), and Flash
Video (YouTube). There are also a few installable media
players that might support even more...
  • Hey! I just got mine today too! I'm going to be posting my first impressions and the unboxing video tonight. Drop me a line if you find a quirk that hasn't been covered all over about the N800 already (I know you will).
  • Nice Jonny, just read your review. :)

I haven't found too much to complain about yet actually. There is one odd text entry bug that I get a lot though. When I leave a text field that I've typed in and reenter it sometimes it causes the first letter of my text to duplicate and also enters a seemingly random line break. Very weird, but it's sporadic so it's not a huge deal.
  • My colleague just bought one, and I must say, it looks like a nice device. It connects seamlessly with his N95 and uses bluetooth + 3G to connect if no approved WLAN is available.

The coolest thing, however, is that it's running Linux, so if you're not happy with the built-in software, ie. the videoplayer, use MPlayer or similar. This is the main reason I'm considering buying one. :)
  • Yeah, I shelled out the money with the understanding that I had no clue why I was buying it except that it is just very cool. Daily, REALLY daily, I look for reasons to own this thing. I actually spend ridiculous amounts of time (embarrassed to say how much)reading the reviews, etc. and searching for a reason to justify the expense. Who the hell knows. Statement not a question. Somewhere above in someone's comments, the phrase "solution without a problem" was used. Accurate...today. I'm betting on the future software.
  • Well Steve I can tell you that you are most definitely not alone. I have spoken to many, many N800 owners who are in the exact same boat. Several people are even quite enthusiastic about owning it but when asked they can't really say why... Hell I was one of them when I had it!

As far as betting on the future software, what would you like to see implemented that would give some purpose to your N800?
  • My $.02 ... It does a lot of things, just not many particularly well. I use mine to watch my netflix movies and listen to rhapsody. in the case of the former, it's pretty good w/ mplayer or canola. the rhapsody interface is so bad, it's hardly useable. interneT browsing is a mixed bag ... some sitES are ok, others not. youtube vIDs are ok at low settings. the vid plaYBack is the only bright spot.
  • The netflix thing is a good idea - video is definitely one of the N800's strong suites when compared to other mobile devices. It looks like I had a much better browsing experience than you but perhaps I don't frequent overly complex sites. It handled just about every site I threw at it very well though.
  • I bought it,seldom use,also added Nokia Navicore(GPS on N800)
Could never get the N800 to see the map sw,useless?
    only useful if it WORKS!
  • Wow that doesn't sound good Mitzou! Have you ever approached customer care about your nav problems?
  • Repeatedly, no joy
