N95 8GB is in Stock at NYC Flagship Store

Started by Zach · 10 months ago

Oddly, I don’t remember putting my name on any list but I just got a call from the NYC Flagship store. The nice woman on the other end of the phone (I didn’t catch her name) informed me that the N95 8GB is now in stock and available on a first come, first serve bas ... Continue reading »

  • I am tempted to get this device and move my service from T-moble to ATT to take advantage of HSDPA (3.5G) in the US. Before I do that, I wanted to know, if this device would work in Europe as well? Does this phone have both US and European HSDPA frequencies? Can someone give an idea about it? Currently I am using E61 in the US and E65 in Europe (my E65 is locked to 3 network in Sweden).
  • Hey Santosh. The N95 8GB actually is not compatible with US HSDPA frequencies. It operates on the 2100-band for HSDPA which is Euro-spec. The N95-3 which was released a while back is the only high-end Nokia (other than the N75) that is compatible with US high speed networks (AT&T; only).

No Nokia - or any mobile that I know of actually - is compatible with both US and Euro HSDPA networks unfortunately.
  • Thanks for your help. So besides the large size of N95 and huge memory, I do not see any benefits with N95 to replace E65 in Europe. I need to keep my E61 on for US calls, but when I am traveling outside Sweden, I wanted to replace E65 with an unlocked phone. (Unfortunately I do not know how to unlock or rather if it is even legal to unlock)
Has anyone tried Sony Ericsson P1i and how does it compare with N95? I hear that it is capable of VoIP as well.
  • Well the N95 has a much different focus than the E65. You'd be gaining a bigger screen, 5mpxl camera, 30fps video recording, better 3D graphics handling etc.

As for the P1i, its lack of 850 band has prevented me from trying it at all as I need that band with AT&T; here in the US. Looks like a nice phone, although people generally either love or hate UIQ.
  • Will edge work with AT&T on the new nokia N95 8gb? How fast will the net work be through AT&T on the nokia N95 8gb?
  • Hey Aimee, yes EDGE will be the best you'll get with the N95 8GB in the US. I use EDGE via AT&T; on most of my phones - and depending on where I am the speeds vary greatly. I've seen as low as 90kb or so and as high as 300kb+. Typically I hover around 200kb when i check it.
  • This is a tough choice. I have to decide between the 8Gb and the US 3G one today. Money is not part of the question. I just can't decide how valuable 3G will be to me. I'm on the At&T network
  • Well the first thing to do is look at the ATT coverage map online to see if you're in a 3G-covered area. If you are then that comes into play. If you're not covered or you decide that 3G isn't important to you then there's not much left to consider.

6GB cards are cheap and 8GB cards are now available, so it really comes down to the look of the phone and the size of the screen (2.6" for the N95-3, 2.8" for the 8GB). I definitely prefer the look of the 8GB, but I decided that 3G is a luxury I didn't want to give up. I don't even enable 3G that much but it's nice to have the option of streaming my Slingbox, media etc wherever I am.
