N95 8GB: the Good and the Bad are Covered, Now for the Ugly

Started by Zach · 1 year ago

I’ve discussed the good and the bad with regards to the N95 8GB, some here on SiMo but mostly elsewhere as this handset has been discussed ad nauseum throughout the blogosphere. One thing that hasn’t been discussed very much - and I find this incredibly surprising - it the audio quality.
The N95 8GB is the […]SHARETHIS.addEntry({ ... Continue reading »

  • Get a bluetooth stereo headset with it's own D/A converter.
  • I've heard nothing but negative comments with regards to the N95's BT stack I'm afraid...+
  • I think your writing rubbish with a good set of phones I find the music quality great. I got rid of my i pod while i had the n73. a different point of view!!
  • You are not exaggerating. I have a N95-1 and feel exactly the same. My biggest complaint is the high amount of static hiss that the phone puts out.

I've discovered that the best thing is to buy head/earphones with an attenuator. Then you crank up the volume on the phone almost to the max and set the attenuator on your earphones cord to minumum. That way it filters out all of the audible layers of hiss.
  • I honestly think the quality of the speakers is poor as the louder you set it the more distorted it becomes.
The earphones that come with all N series are a joke (bar the N93i music edition), I opted for a good pair of in ear Sennheiser CX300 and they work a charm both with the N95 and N82. When it comes to Music playback only the N81 can do a decent job.
I agree Nokia has overlooked the audio playback quality on their handsets, they should take a look at the Samsung range for some hints.
  • Thanks for your comments guys. Of course everyone is entitled to an opinion, and the post above is mine. :)

Just to further clarify, at one point in time or another I've used my N95-3 or N95-4 along with AKG K240s, Etymotic ER-4 in-ears, three different pairs of Shures, Ultrasone PROline 750s and various others including the OEM buds. Suffice it to say I've given it a good amount of testing. I've yet to be anything but disappointed.
  • Thats the mistake you are making! Trying to plug in 40mm driver headphones into an underpowered n95 isn't going to give you any musical joy i'm aftraid atleast not without an amp! After just taking receipt of my n95 8gb and comparing it to previous DAPS ive owned including sony's, irivers ipods etc I will say the DSP in the n95 is VERY bright and by extension bass anaemic! This in mind, pairing it with armature based earphones such as Ety's and most shures (sonically bright by design) will most likely produce a sound that would give most people a headache! It doesnt help matters by having a piss poor EQ.

The way to go to produce a sound that is atleast on par (maybe even better depending on your musical preferences) with higher-end DAPS is to use dynamic based canalphones or IEM's. More specifically, ones with good bass impact, warm mids and rolled-off highs. Tweak the EQ somewhat and you might not be to far off from musical nirvana....
  • Well, the N96 product manager seemed pretty upbeat when I asked him about the sound quality - he said better than the N91! IMO the N91 is quite a benchmark so we have something to look forward too.
Plus the N91 quality will be standard on all upcoming Nseries devices, this is evidenced by the N78's capabilities.
I also read a review by Eldar over a MR, he said the N96 audio is much better than the N95 series, but he'd expected more from the dedicated audio unit the N96 has. He had a proto so may be it'll improve?!

    Time'll tell! :)
  • Re: N96, time will tell indeed! And maybe sooner rather than later... ;)
  • Damn! Lucky you! ;)
  • oh....., all these issiues i can't wait for the n96, it looks so dam slick!!!!
  • Speaking of email, you do know that you can open the attachment sent with HTML email messages to view the email in HTML format rather than plain text, right?
  • Yessir! A painful slap in the face from the DOSesque UI each time I see that attachment... ;)
  • why not free?
