Symbian in Motion: NStarter by Nomiel

  • Lokesh · 2 years ago
Wow this is a nifty little app indeed! Will try it out asap!just hope that the ram usage is indeed little as we all know that our 3rd ed devices have not much ram to spare!
  • David · 2 years ago
I get a KERN-EXEC 3 error when trying to start Nstarter on my N95 after signing the file. Anyone else have this problem?
  • zach · 2 years ago
Yes David thanks for posting. It is confirmed that the current version doesn't work on the N95. The author knows this and will be working on a fix for the next version.
  • David · 2 years ago
Great - the app looks really cool, I'll be waiting for an update. :)
  • Al · 2 years ago
The author should consider some FP1 phones dont have the PEN key anymore
  • locus · 2 years ago
Finally, been looking for something like this since i got a 3rd ed phone..
  • Rita El Khoury · 2 years ago
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW that is SWEET, you have just Made My Day! Now rebooting won't be a trouble and re-launching Phone Guardian and MobiGenie... Just assign the shortcuts and off I go. I luv it!
  • Hardeep · 2 years ago
This app really rocks! Thanks for posting Zach.

Ever since I stumbled upon your blog from google...you have me hooked on :) Your reviews are to the point and site layout is clean & cool..
    Keep up the good work..cheers
  • zach · 2 years ago
    @Rita

I'm glad you like it! Nomiel certainly did a great job. :)

    @Hardeep

Thanks so much for your kind words!! It means a lot to me that you are enjoying my blog and that you find it useful! I don't maintain this blog for the money (as you can see I don't post any advertisements and I'm not sure that I ever will), I do it because I enjoy it and I get to talk to interesting people and deal with some very talented developers.

Thanks again and I hope you keep coming back!

Download updated to version 1.04 :)
  • stefan fischer · 2 years ago
Is there another download-mirror? The account on box.net is out of bandwidth.
  • zach · 2 years ago
    @stefan

Thanks so much for bringing this to my attention! Wow, these files are all so tiny and you guys have already used up my 10GB of bandwidth this month! lol

I've just upgraded to a premium box.net account with unlimited downloads so give that link another try and it should be fine. ;)
  • zach · 2 years ago
    Download updated to v1.05.
  • David · 2 years ago
Superb! now I can easily switch between writing languages! I am so gratefull!!!!!!!! :)))))))))))
    Thanks dude!!!
  • zach · 2 years ago
    No problem David :)

And thanks to Nomiel for creating this great must-have app!
  • freemien · 2 years ago
Thanks for this great software Nomiel (and Zach)!
I just can't believe that Nokia failed to create a shortcut for switching input language! On my N95 I needed 5 different key strokes just to switch language.
    Well, you made my day!
  • Little Snake · 2 years ago
    Excellent app, but ...
Would it be possible to make it work on other v4 phones - those without the "pen key" like 6290?

Zach, have you got contact with Nomiel and could you possibly tell him about this little dream of mine?

    Please x 6
  • zach · 2 years ago
@Little Snake I surely will contact Nomiel and pass on your suggestion - it's a good one!

looks like symbian signed is denying new account registrations again. is there some other way to get this awesome app signed so i can try it out on my brand new n75? i saw where on some forums, some people were giving their IMEI numbers and requesting for certain apps to be signed and sent back to them.. is that safe to do?

thanks guys, and zach, i love your site, it's been a huge help for me getting started in the world of s60 (i was a cingular blackjack user.. and am so glad to be using symbian now)
  • zach · 2 years ago
Thanks for the kind words replicant!

I'm actually on vacation right now but why don't you send me an email and we can discuss this further. ;) Btw it's never a good idea to post your IMEI in public.

It could be used Camera or Backspace key instead of Pen key like in Screenshot application from http://www.antonypranata.com/screenshot/?
Newest Nokia phones like 6120 Classic or 6110 Navigator don't have Pen key.
  • Gil Uriel · 2 years ago
Hi. Nokia 6120 Classic does not have a Pen button. Can you create a version that uses another key as the basic one ? (i.e. the # or * keys ) ?
another option .. letting the user chose his basic key ..

  • zach · 2 years ago
I'm unfortunately not the author of this awesome app but I'll try to contact him and suggest it. In the meantime, you might want to check our Tracker by SmartphoneWare. It will allow you to configure any hotkey shortcut to any game/app on your phone.
  • merlin · 1 year ago
Is the developpment of Nstarter still going on or is it stalled ?
Would be a pity if there's no new version coming, since there will be more and more Nokia phone without 'Pen' (edit) key and there seems to be some bugs too (notifications do not display anymore since firmware upgrade on E50).
  • zach · 1 year ago
Hey merlin - I haven't seen anything come from Nomiel in a while but there is a sort of rip-off app that you might try. It's called Phone Shortcuts by Tektronic.
  • Ricardo · 1 year ago
It seems that firmware v20 on the N95 broke NStarter, at least for me, even with a fresh install. Is the same happening to you?
  • zach · 1 year ago
Huh! To be perfectly honest I updated my N95-1, played with it for a few minutes, and put it right back in the box lol. I'll try to pull it out and give it a whirl.

What exactly is the error you're getting? If it's not running at all it may be locked up at boot (this has happened to me). Try launching it from your menu and then minimizing it. If that works, just add it to the startup list in PowerBoot (even though it autostarts already) and that should resolve the problem.
  • Ricardo · 1 year ago
hi Zach, it simply opens and closes (fully closed as stated by Y-tools), if I try openening from the menu the samething happens: I click, it shows partially in the screen (I can see the Nstarter logo) and it closes.

I've checked now and the samething is happening to Best taskman, probably Nokia broke some api those programs used =\
  • zach · 1 year ago
Very odd! I didn't get a chance to try it yet but I looked around a bit and haven't seen people mentioning problems. I'll keep looking though.
  • Ricardo · 1 year ago
Did a reinstall with reboots after removing and reinstalling and it's now working just fine :)
  • zach · 1 year ago
Excellent! Looks like something just got clogged up - glad it's fixed now though.
  • nightwalking · 1 year ago
love this application very much. but the only problem is that it cannot run automatically when the N73 starts.
  • zach · 1 year ago
Try leaving autostart enabled in the app but also add it to the boot list in PowerBoot. Even though NStarter does autostart, sometimes it locks up depending on other apps that are autostarting. PowerBoot usually resolves this by running it again.
  • tasioskis · 1 year ago
    very very good
  • tasioskis · 1 year ago
from where may i download this app.?
  • zach · 1 year ago
The download link is in the second paragraph of the post (first word, in blue).
  • merlin · 1 year ago
Am I the only experiencing notification problems ?
Since the last firmware upgrade on my E50, Nstarter no longer shows notifications when launching apps :-(

I'm using this software to have shortcuts for bluetooth, french/english language switching and reboot; Phone shortcuts by Tektronic has an ugly UI (like all their softwares by the way) and isn't as well thought as Nstarter (plus it isn't freeware), so it's not an option for me...

I think I could live without the notifications, but I would like to know if the bug was introduced by the firmware update or if it's something on my side...
  • zach · 1 year ago
Hey merlin - if you're using version 1.05 check the menu near the top. There is an option there to toggle notifications on and off.
  • merlin · 1 year ago
That's the problem in fact: toggling this menu do not work anymore: it was as if something was broken since the last firmware...
  • zach · 1 year ago
Definitely try reinstalling the app merlin. Also make sure you install it to phone memory.
  • merlin · 1 year ago
I have uninstalled it, then install on phone memory and rebooted. Despite the fact that notifications are set to "on", they do not appear. I think Nokia has indeed changed something in the last firmware that broke this feature.
Well, as I said before, I should be able to live without it. Thanks for helping nonetheless everybody, SiMo rules :-)
  • zach · 1 year ago
No problem merlin - Sorry we couldn't get it working the way you want.
  • awwad · 1 year ago

i`ve got - certificate error , contact app supplier- on my e65
why? my settings in phone are - soft install - all, cert check - off

    thanks
  • Zach · 1 year ago
The app is unsigned and must be signed with a developer certificate before it can be installed.
  • Abernolak · 1 year ago
    to zach:
ok i see.how can i get signed one?
    because i`ve got only - NStarter_v1.05_unsigned.zip
    ?
    thanks
  • Zach · 1 year ago
Unfortunately Symbian Signed only allows developers to obtain certificates now so if you don't already have one you'll need to either forget about installing the app or search google on how to hack your phone to allow the installation of unsigned apps. Thanks to Symbain Signed...
  • Abernolak · 1 year ago
    strange...
i`ve thought that free is for free...hehe
    never mind..
    thanks
  • Zach · 1 year ago
Wouldn't that be great! Symbian Signed makes it very painful for small developers to sign freeware. As such, this is the pain we have to go through...
  • schakanak · 1 year ago
    Nice App
  • Sascha · 1 year ago
not working on Nokia E71, when will it be supported?
  • Zach · 1 year ago
I haven't heard anything about the app in quite a while so I wouldn't
anticipate any revisions. There is another similar app available on
Handango though I can't recall the name.
  • tsaar · 9 months ago
Do you know another application that can switch between writing languages?
  • fizzaliciosu · 11 months ago
Anybody has any updates about e71?
  • tsaar · 9 months ago
Anyone knows a way to use this NStarter with E51 with doesn't have the PEN key?
Or a similar application that can switch between writing languges with a single key stoke?

    Thanks!
