This is one of those blogs that got me interested in the S60 platform and Nokia products. I started blogging on Symbian-Addict after seeing blogs like this one and the cool community that Nokia/Symbian has. I've always enjoyed reading EVERY article you write and have trusted your blog as one of my top sources.

Good luck in everything you do I know you will always succeed. Just stay true and you will be fine.

Re: SiMo, a Retrospective

Hope we see a post soon....

Sometimes it is good to leave something and move ahead... but sometimes its best not to leave somethings behind. I hope you will not leave this blog and its power be diluted. Sometimes you have to fight against the tide.

Best of luck!

Re: SiMo, a Retrospective

Finally you took the Decision,I thought there might be a change, but sadly it didn't happen.Abul and Zach thanks alot for bringing good stuff and you guys kept us informed well in this field.
Thanks for the contribution and hope to see another facet of this.

Re: SiMo, a Retrospective

Thanks for the kind words! Well, right now my daily carrier is a BlackBerry Bold but rest assured that has nothing to do with shutting down the blog. The decision to close SiMo was made about a month ago actually. I also still have an N95-4 and an E71, though I'll likely ditch the E71 since the Bold renders it pretty useless...

Re: SiMo, a Retrospective

Well said I coudnt agree more, I love nokia as have had alot of phones and the symbian platform is great and my n95 8gb is by far my favorite up to this point. Zach if you dont mind me asking, what phone are you currently using all the time instead of your 8gb?? Again I understand your wanting to leave all this behind, but the one thing I really enjoyed was your posts that no-one else talked about. That is how I found alot of my apps, themes, and other great pieces of info, just wanted to again thank you for this and to keep it up on BGR, Outsidr and any other places you take the time to blog!!!

Re: SiMo, a Retrospective

Thanks for the kind words Stefan. Good luck with your new endeavor - Nokia certainly has its work cut out for it if it hopes to remain competitive in the smartphone market but the good news is that it's in a hell of a position to turn things around on the innovation front.

Re: SiMo, a Retrospective

Thanks Eric - I'm glad to hear you say that! When I started the blog, that was a very big reason. I found tons of blogs that recycled each other's news but very few that went deep into individual applications in order to show customers the many, many possibilities that apps might afford them.

As I'm sure you've noticed however, I haven't had time to create in depth posts like I have in the past and that was another reason for closing this blog - no time to create the kind of posts I wanted to create. Hopefully someone out there will pick up the slack. ;)

Re: SiMo, a Retrospective

You will be missed. I may have only met you once in LON, but I knew you were an awesome blogger. I too am finding the mobile space a bit boring, but that is why I joined Nokia, to make a difference.

Here is hoping we deliver in the coming months, years and you sure as hell bet the upcoming decade.

Re: SiMo, a Retrospective

When you started, I felt nobody else was actually doing in-depth coverage of what makes S60 so incredible, the software library. I'm very sad to see this site go. Yes, I love dotsisx / Symbian Guru but honestly almost nobody else is producing original content.

btw- I enjoy your BGR contributions.

- Eric in Cupertino

Re: SiMo, a Retrospective

Thanks for the comments Kerry, and I'm most definitely looking forward to seeing the fruits of Simon's (and everyone else's) work. It is absolutely true what you say; "it's only through the influencing voices of people like you that it can get to the ears of those who are able to make it." I hope that you continue to post your thoughts and impressions of Nokia and S60 - I know I will continue to do so, just not here on a dedicated blog. Nokia is more in touch with the blogosphere than any other manufacturer and the louder we shout, the more likely it is that our message might get across.

As for me ditching S60, that won't be happening any time soon. Though my daily carrier these days isn't a Nokia handset I still have and love my N95 8GB and my E71. Nokia really shines when it comes to building phones but since it was decided at the top that Nokia would become an "internet company", advancement has really been stunted in terms of Nokia's hardware (and OS). They continue to push out striking and capable devices but when you look at them closely, little has changed in the past few years.

As I touch upon above, Nokia has been sitting pretty at the top for far too long. The impression I get is: "Hey we sell all these handsets so let's focus on services that will increase our revenue per device rather than focus on new customer acquisition." They couldn't have picked a worse time for this approach because it has basically left their core business standing still while the competition heats up like never before.

The future is going to be awesome in this space, and I'm confident that Nokia will eventually decide to join the party. ;)

Re: SiMo, a Retrospective

really astute comments Zach. Nokia certainly cant stand still with RIM and Apple breathing down their necks. So it will be interesting to see what happens next. And, for those companies that have to develop for Symbian and others, well here's hoping....

Anyway stay tuned for a fully refreshed Symbian version of Palringo towards the end of the month.

(and of course, we're glad to have played a part in stimulating comments!)

Good luck !

Kerry Ritz
CEO
Palringo

Re: SiMo, a Retrospective

Although I kind of sympathize with the decision, I am a bit surprised to see you give up on the work that you have invested so much time in. Yes sometimes, you need to drop things and move forward, but I feel sorry that you're not just dropping a project, but from the tone of your post, also giving up on S60 and Nokia.

I agree that changes have to occur in S60 in order for it to move forward, I have been pondering these for a LONG time, but if a change has to be made, it's only through the influencing voices of people like you that it can get to the ears of those who are able to make it.

Anyway, good luck on the Outsidr (and BGR), Zach, it has been a very nice ride with SiMo, especially that I was a regular reader ever since the beginning. And thank you for this post, because as always, you made me realize something new through your writing. Sometimes I got to know a new app, other times a new service, others a new tip or trick... Today I learned that I am even further than I though from leaving S60. I am sticking, not because I believe in the platform, but because I believe in the same people that you praise in your post.

Re: SiMo, a Retrospective

You guys are great! i always looked at this site first for anything symbian as well as how i learned more and more about symbian through this site.

You both have excellent work and i wish you all the best in the future!

Re: SiMo, a Retrospective

The King is dead, long live the King! :)

It was a pleasure guys, SiMo will be missed!

Re: SiMo, a Retrospective

How sad.
