Symbian in Motion: Tips & Tricks: Removing Themes

  • nipul · 2 years ago
your blog is way better than tommi one. I love your blog. keep it coming
  • Shaun · 2 years ago
if I installed themes on my phone directory, not on my memory card, how can I delete them? I can't find my things of my phone memory in the windows xp explorer neither..
  • zach · 2 years ago
If they're in your phone memory you should be able to remove them properly. Just go into Tools -> App manager and find them once your app list loads. Then chose Options -> Remove.
  • zagado26 · 2 years ago
Excellent job man and many thanks, with your help I have succed to remove several themes from my n73!
  • zach · 2 years ago
Great, I'm glad it worked for you!
  • dam · 2 years ago
hey thanks!! i was able to remove so many themes from my e50 now...and btw,any way of sharing the installed themes via bluetooth or something? pls let me know...thanks
  • zach · 2 years ago
dam, Thanks for your comments. Once a theme is installed there is no way to share it because the theme components are installed to protected folders that you cannot access on the device. You can however, send the theme sis files to your phone and store them on your MMC in an accessible folder (maybe create a folder in the root directory of your MMC called Themes). Then you can send them to whomever you like via bt.
  • fforward72 · 2 years ago
When I´m trying to connect via mass storage it says "Unable to activate mass storage mode. Memory card in use by another application".

Please tell me what to do. I am desperate...
  • zach · 2 years ago
This message means that you have an application installed on your MMC that is running a process in the background that can't be stopped. Without know what apps you have installed, your best bet is to take the MMC out of your phone and insert it into a card reader. Otherwise you can check out your running processes/tasks and try to determine which app is causing the problem. Then uninstall it and reinstall it on your phone memory.
  • andre · 2 years ago
thanks mate, perfect instructions; applied to the nokia 5500 just for reference ;) i had the bug where u uninstall an app and it then creates a 1kb .sis file called a00002334.sis or something random that you can't delete from the apps manager.. your data cable solution worked a treat, thanks again!
  • andre · 2 years ago
to the dude whos fone said somethings using the memory card, it should be fine if you just restart the phone. (power off and on) mine did that the second time i tried that mode, but worked after restarting.
  • zach · 2 years ago
Great andre, I'm glad this post helped you out! :)
  • Jonny · 2 years ago
great post thanks, worked a treat.just had to show hidden files first!
  • Jo · 2 years ago
how do u connect using mass storage mode? :S do u need a cable for it or can u just do it by bluetooth? :S
  • zach · 2 years ago
You need a data cable for this, otherwise you'll need to use a card reader instead. When you plug in the cable, a menu will automatically pop up on your device and one option will be Mass storage mode.
  • Jo · 2 years ago
    aww...well thx loads :D :D :D
  • joon · 2 years ago
Well I just did a software upgrade on my phone and restored my phone memory from memory card...the themes i installed to phone memory no longer appear under app manager. how can i remove them?
  • zach · 2 years ago
Yes unfortunately the 'restore' functionality on S60 3rd devices never seems to work quite right. If there are themes in your phone memory that show up in your themes list but not in app manager, the only thing you can do to get rid of them is format your phone.
  • khushi · 2 years ago
dude thanks a lot it helped me a lot to remove the themes thanksssssssssssssssssss a millllion......................
  • pete · 2 years ago
Some good stuff here, thanks! I wish I got here earlier, because... On my e50 I solved the problem by deleting the whole private folder from my memory card (I had only themes installed, didn't need them any more and couldn't remove them via app man). This however created another problem: I can't install any of the removed themes again. And it doesn't matter whether I try to install it on the memory card or the phone itself, I just get an error (unable to install, that's all).
I already reformatted my card, I think there are unneeded entries in the install.log file, but I can't access it. Actually, I can't even find it :). Help :)! Can you please give me a hand with that?
  • zach · 2 years ago
I absolutely can give you a hand! :)

This is a direct result of the Symbian bug that causes this whole problem - the themes are installed and an installation record is kept on the phone, but the 'uninstall' record is not properly created. So, when you manually delete these themes using the method outlined above, the theme is deleted but the is still a record of the theme being installed. Your device won't let you install it again because it thinks there is a previous version but it cannot locate the files to prepare to overwrite them.

Getting around this problem is actually quite easy. Do a quick google search for "unsis 2.5" - it's pretty easy to find. Unsis is a PC app that allows you to unpack sis/sisx files and save their contents on your PC. Once you've installed it, simply follow these two steps (from my guide on the <a target="_blank" title="mobile9 forums" href="http://www.mobile9.com/invboard/index.php?" rel="nofollow">mobile9.com forums):

    1. Open uNsIs and load the theme by pressing 'Open SIS', then browse to the theme file on your PC.

    2. Press the 'Extract' button. 3-4 files will be unpacked into a new folder with the directory C:\uNsIs\temp\private\10207114\import (if you installed unsis to the default location).

In the directory listed above, you will now find the theme folder (with a long alpha-numeric name) that used to be on your MMC before you deleted the theme. Simply transfer that folder with all of its contents to \\private\10207114\import on your MMC (using Mass storage mode or a card reader). Viola! You're back in business. ;)
  • pete · 2 years ago
Many thanks, Unsis did the job :)!
Just another quickie on the topic: is there any way of altering, or actually accessing, the important system files (i.e. install.log) to get rid of the installation record left in the phone after removing applications manually (not via app man)?
The reason I'm asking is because when you have to remove something manually, you always leave traces of it in the memory of the phone (probably it is not only the mentioned installation record). This might make a mess of things in the future. Besides, I really don't like doing only partial cleanup...;]
  • zach · 2 years ago
Great, I'm glad it worked Pete! :)

As far as your other question goes, OS 9.x is very secure and it's difficult (for me at least) to say exactly where installation and registry data is stored. Personally, I would highly doubt that the user is granted access to these records.

What I can say, is that if you use a file manager such as X-plore, ActiveFile, Y-Browser etc you can have a look around. I see one file for example in the main C: directory called "INSTAPP.TXT" that contains some data but it certainly did not list all installations and I didn't find any of my installed themes referenced in the file at all. I would also be very hesitant to edit it.

I think that your best chance of finding a definitive answer is on the forums at http://forum.nokia.com/.
  • pete · 2 years ago
Yes, that's exactly what I did - took a look around everywhere I could :). But you end up with rubbish to be honest, there's little worth mentioning to be found :(. I think we'd need some pro software to read the interesting bits... And some courage for the experiments, heheh :D.

Anyway, thanks again for your help, all the best!
  • Innocent · 2 years ago
    Hi,
Gentlemen, I don't know why my case is diffrent. I still could,t see some themes I wanted to delete from my phone and memeory card. I connected the phone on MASS STORAGE MODE but nothing was seen. If I backup my phone memory on the card and format the phone it will I lose something? Or is there any other way out?I will appeciate a little more help, I need to get these themes of my memories.

    Tx
  • zach · 2 years ago
Are you certain that you're looking in the proper directories? Provided the themes are installed to the memory card, I have never heard of anyone not having success with this method. When you say "nothing was seen" do you mean that the theme weren't in that directory or that you couldn't see any files at all?

As far as backing up to your memory card, most people run into problems when restoring their data. When I get ready to format, I sync my contacts/PIM with Outlook and save all of my personal files. Then I format and restore everything manually. It a PIA of sorts but it's the only way to ensure that it's done properly.
  • Milan · 2 years ago
Thanks for the great tip on how to remove unwanted themes. Cheers !
  • DJ · 2 years ago
Hi I have a nokia N95 and after doing a software update, and restoring the backup from my memory card I am unable to delete my themes and two of them are corrupted I stored them to the phone memory and they show up under themes but I cannot find them anywhere else when I hook it up to my pc via usb. I read that formatting the phone is a solution but I do not know how to go about doing that please help, THANX!
  • zach · 2 years ago
Have you tried removing them from within Tools -> App manager? If they don't show up there ten yes, formatting is the only way to remove them. Keep in mind though that you will lose all of your personal data and files. To format, turn your phone off and then hold down the following keys as you power it back on - until you see the welcome screen:

    [*] + [3] + [green] (send)

Most people have problems with backup/restore so your best bet is to back up your data/files manually and then restore everything yourself.
  • DJ · 2 years ago
I had to format my phone, thank you very much I would never have gotten rid of those themes had it not been for you.
  • Dash · 2 years ago
How do I uninstall games from My 91 that do not appear in the Application Manager. And only appear as icons in My Own folder which are not even functional
  • zach · 2 years ago
This is a tough question. As long as you installed the games to your MMC you should be ok though...

Start out by putting your MMC in a card reader (or mass storage mode) and use windows search to se if you can find any files with the name of each game. If you do, delete them and let me know how that goes.

Btw, this might be easier to discuss if you start a new topic in the M9 Nokia User Support forum.
  • Dash · 2 years ago
Yeah I think we will eventually create a new topic. But the problem here is that there isn't a memory card instead we have a hard disk and I don't know the location or directory where these applications are stored... any idea??
  • zach · 2 years ago
    Oh I see - that's a problem...

If you've already highlighted the game icons in your menu and tried Options -> Remove then unfortunately you only have two options:

    1. Ignore them

    2. Backup all of your data and format your phone

With S60 3rd devices you cannot access the hidden files/folders on your C drive so there's no other way to remove them. :(

My only advice is to back up and restore everything manually. Using the Nokia Backup/restore you'll likely run into problems again...
  • ELI · 2 years ago
    Hi
I tried all the steps but when i connect my phone as mass storage I dont c the folder call private
  • zach · 2 years ago
    Very strange ELI.

Perhaps your private folder is marked as hidden. In your folder window try going to Tools -> Folder options...

Then under Advanced settings on the View tab, make sure "Show hidden files and folders" is checked.

Let me know how that works out.
  • grouet · 2 years ago
    Cool ! thanks
  • Ashish · 2 years ago
Thanks for ur help mate... The info u shared was really helpful... ;)
  • J · 2 years ago
Great tips!. But I still have a question: is there anyway to reinstall the themes that were removed from the memory card back to the phone memory? I have a Cingular branded N75.
  • zach · 2 years ago
    There sure is :)

    Check out this post.
  • Dinesh · 2 years ago
Hi, i share the same problem as ELI mentioned earlier...

I have read posts on many forum's that advise 2 things:
    1) Remove via App. Manager
    2) Remove via Mass Transfer

Most instruct to navigate to /private/...
BUT THE PROBLEM IS THAT I CANNOT FIND THE "/PRIVATE" FOLDER. PLEASE HELP, AM PRETTY DESPERATE.

I have already checked if the folder is Hidden...but it is not. It is just not there.

I am using the Y-Browser software as my file-manager, but i can't seem to find the folder using that either.

    Please help!
or mail to ultraswamy .at. yahoo .dot. com
  • zach · 2 years ago
Hi Dinesh. What you're missing is that this is a hidden folder and cannot be accessed with any file browser on the phone. As the guide specifics, you should connect to a PC in Mass Storage mode, or put your MMC into a card reader and connect that to your PC.

Have a look at the guide again and I'm sure it will work out for you.
  • Dinesh · 2 years ago
Wow! I did like you said, and right enough the folder was staring me in the face. Thank you so much! ...To think i came so close to formatting! :)
  • zach · 2 years ago
No problem at all Dinesh - I'm just glad we avoided a format! :)
  • nokiae65 · 2 years ago
Absolute genuis.......Thanks about telling about unsis software.....u solved a big prob of mine about reinstalling themes again......Hats off to u
  • Claire · 2 years ago
Hi, I have tried to connect my E65 to PC through cable, but can't find "mass storage" mode, where can I find this? Also I have tried to find the "private" folder but can't seem to find it. I've clicked on "show hidden files etc".

Any chance you could tell me where I am going wrong? I have loads of themes that I want to delete. Thanks.
  • zach · 2 years ago
It looks like in FP1 the 'Mas storage' option has been renamed to 'data transfer'. Give that one a try.
  • Claire from Worcester, England · 2 years ago
    Hi Zach,

Thank you so much for the above, and I finally got into the folder and deleted all my themes!! What a palaver! Why can't Nokia just make things easy for people?!! I shall definately make sure which themes to download from now on!!
  • zach · 2 years ago
I'm glad it helped Claire! :) Yeah, it would be nice if Nokia would sort this little bug out but since they haven't fixed it by now i think we can assume that they won't...
  • J · 2 years ago
Hi zach: the link below is to a post that allows you to reinstall the removed theme to a memory card:

    http://news.mobile9.com/s60apps/2007/05/16/tips...

I still have a question that is there anyway to reinstall the themes that were removed from the memory card back to the "phone memory"? I have a Cingular branded N75.
  • zach · 2 years ago
Hey J - The only way to do it (without formatiing your phone) is to use WinSIS or a similar app (SISware for example) to build a new sis package. You can find a short guide that I wrote here.
  • kailas · 2 years ago
Thanks a lot , a very useful and simplified solution.
  • AlexAv · 2 years ago
Hi sorry but how I format an N73?

and what folders I have to backup using the mass storage option, I dont want to loose contacts and other important things...

By the way thanx a lot for all your nice work here... :)
  • zach · 2 years ago
To format, hold [*] + [7] + [send] while powering on and don't let go until you see the Nokia hands animation.

In terms of backing up, you can use Contacts Transfer to back up your contacts or you can Sync with Outlook using PC Suite.

The best thing to do is a backup/restore using PC Suite, but to avoid conflicts you should uninstall all apps and themes first from your App Manager.
  • DJ Fusion · 2 years ago
Thanks for all the tips! I did a restore from my memory card and all of my themes became corrupt. They were also no longer listed under my app manager, NOR were they in the folder on my mem stick that you suggested I try (there was no 10207114 folder in the private directory on my N95 mem card). I did a phone reset from within the phone settings and that didnt work either.

Finally I did a [*] + [3] + [green] (send) phone format and that got rid of all my themes (and everything else lol).

Lesson learned, next time I wont be using the backup/restore feature.
  • zach · 2 years ago
Ah - [3], you're right! lol My mistake!

And yes I have NEVER had a good experience with backup/restore. Nokia needs to either fix it or junk it because it's garbage as-is...
  • adrina · 2 years ago

  • zach · 2 years ago
Hi adrina, have a look at this post which should be helpful.

Note that unsis 2.5 was a bit buggy so I've updated the post to call for unsis 2.7 which is a very stable build.
  • kasun · 2 years ago

2.7 is a better version to use. If you search google for "unsis 2.7" I'm sure you'll find it. ;)
  • ncc · 2 years ago
I downloaded a themes for my N80 and installed them.

few days later, i realise some themes are no longer there and i try to reinstall again.

However, this time till the end of the installation, my phone says "Unable to Install".

I try to u y browser to look file but can?

Check out this guide to reinstall them :)
  • aaa · 2 years ago
    hi
    i canoot find \private\10207114\import
their is no folder under 10207114,i can see private but their no folder as 10207114.now help me,how to delete the themes.....
  • long · 2 years ago
i just bought a new N95... somehow , i deleted a file name wduninstaller.sisx ? can you tell me what the file do ? any do i need that file in the future ? how can i restored ?
  • zach · 2 years ago
@aaa What type of phone do you have? Also, if you're looking with a file explorer on the device you won't find it as it's hidden. You'll need to connect to a PC as described above.

@long Where did you delete the file from? If your phone is still working fine I wouldn't worry about it but if you're having problems, formatting your phone will bring it back (back up first!).
  • QuarkGreen · 2 years ago
Thank you for this tip. It is exactly the problem I have and the solution I need. Keep up the good work.
  • zach · 2 years ago
Thanks for the kind words and I'm glad this post helped you. :)
  • Lacie · 2 years ago
Hey...i still cant delete the themes save on my memory card in my E65...however,i managed to delete the ones in my phones memory but not the memory card ones..Help!!!
Ps:I followed ur instructions and the only thing that is frustrating is that i cant find the "\private\10207114\import"
And there is no "Mass storage mode"...only "Data Transfer mode" or "Pc Suite mode"....
  • zach · 2 years ago
Hey Lacie, the verbiage does vary on certain devices. You'll need to be in "Data transfer mode". Then your MMC will appear as a drive in My Computer and you should be able to navigate to that folder. Let me know how it goes. :)
  • Shalu · 2 years ago
hi frnds, went thru all the posts but mine is a different problem....when i am trying to install a theme (which previously i installed and unistalled sucessfully ) i am getting a msg that the theme already exists....but i am unable to find the theme in both app manager and in private folder.....can anyone help me out in this???????
  • Shalu · 2 years ago
hey here comes my second doubt.....please go thru this link http://dotsisx.vox.com/library/post/trick-unins... ......this procedure is not working on my N95 :(....
  • zach · 2 years ago
Hey Shalu - have a look at this post for some guidance.
  • Shalu · 2 years ago
Thank u very much for the response...vil try that and get back 2 u...
  • Shalu · 2 years ago
my second doubt is still the same....
  • zach · 2 years ago
So you still can't reinstall the themes that way? That's very odd indeed... Unfortunately the only option left might be to back up all of your data manually and format your phone. :(
  • lilly · 2 years ago
hey .. i STILL have a problem finding the "private" folder .. im using an E65 .. and i've tried browsing through the memory card using a cable.. i've downloaded uNsis, extracted the themes, chose not to hide any folders from the drive tools. and yet..I CANT FIND IT..
please help.. (some of the themes im trying to re-install are reallly special to me)
    thanks
  • zach · 2 years ago
lily - why don't you shoot me an email with links to a few of the themes you're trying to reinstall. I'll resign them and see if it works that way. :)
  • lilly · 2 years ago
zach- serious?? that would be great .. just tell me where to send to :)
anything to avoid a format, and get those themes back on my screen...
    thanks
  • zach · 2 years ago
No problem lilly - but don't thank me until it works... ;)

You can send it to either email address list on the "About the Author" page.
  • lilly · 2 years ago
    sent the e-mail... any hope??
  • Robert Adrian Dizon · 2 years ago
Thank you for this solution, I bought an N73 a couple of days ago and I've been downloading and installing themes nonstop, and this 'uninstalling' prob comes up but thanks to your perfect solution (found by googling) everything's tidied up. Cheers.
  • zach · 2 years ago
Great Robert - I'm glad this post helped you out! If you end up wanting to reinstall any of the themes that you've removed you'll run into a new problem but no worries as you'll find the solution to that problem here as well. ;)

my nokia e50 says that the file is corrupted when i try to install .sis files. it was working before. i changed my memory card to 1 gb, now its showing this error. kindly help
  • zach · 2 years ago
Copying your files from one MMC to another never seems to work properly. Try uninstalling any apps/games from your MMC, formatting it, and trying to install again.
  • symbian · 2 years ago
When you uninstall themes you need the new ones to install :)
  • Aca · 2 years ago
    I don't understand...i am new.....where i must go,to delete themes in phone memory...thanks
  • zach · 2 years ago
Themes installed to your phone memory should appear in your app manager. From the menu just got to Tools -> App Manager and then highlight the theme and choose Options -> Remove.

@danish I understand that you are having problems but you are now spamming my blog. Your problem no longer directly relates to this post and therefore shouldn't be posted here.

Please head over to s60.howardforums.com - this is a much more appropriate place to post your problem. I'll try to head over later to help you but if you describe your problem clearly you'll find plenty of help there.

    Thanks for understanding!

  • zach · 2 years ago
Hopefully you'll get some good guidance in the HoFo thread but the quickest way to fix it would be to back everything up, format your MMC, perform a hard reset of your device, and then restore everything. Might be a PIA but it'll work every time.

Note that if you're using a PC to format your MMC you should use FAT and not FAT 32.
  • nikhil · 2 years ago
how 2 perform hard reset n whts pia?can u give an easier way which i can understand
  • zach · 2 years ago
    Sorry about that nikhil!

PIA = "Pain In the Ass" ;) To hard reset your phone, first turn it off. Then hold:

    [*] [3] [send] and [power]

As your phone turns on, continue holding these four buttons until you see the welcome animation (Nokia handshake).

Please be aware that you will lose ALL of your data performing this procedure. You need to back everything up - contacts, photos, files, etc. Also, make sure that you format your memory card BEFORE you format your phone. Best of luck!
  • nikhil · 2 years ago
hey zach thx alot for the reply.i still did get the buttons 2 press it is->[*] [3] [send]hey dude which is the send button? n [power]tht is the black button on top.plz help me out with the send button.n 1 more thing is there n e danger 2 my cell after the hard reset?
  • zach · 2 years ago
You're right nikhil - power = the black button that you hold to turn the phone on. Send = the green call button.

As for danger, nope, not at all. Once you do this your phone will be just like it was when you first took it out of the box - no personal data, no third-party apps, etc.

hey zach thxxxxxxxxxxxxxx alot u rock dude.1 last thing is there ne danger 2 the phone by updating its firmware?and will the themes start installing after the hard reset?
  • zach · 2 years ago
    No prob at all :)

Updating the firmware is pretty safe as long as you use the Nokia software updater. Don't use any stolen or crack3d software if you want to be safe. Also, make sure your battery is fully charged when you update.

If you do update your firmware, you don't have to worry about hard resetting your phone. The firmware update will reset everything for you. You should still back up all of your data though and also format your memory card before updating your firmware.

Either method (format memory card/hard reset or format memory card/update firmware) will fix your themes problem. :)

    Hi,
I have installed a theme (for example tree.sis)
to my N95 but I cannot see that in settings>general>personalisation>themes>general. On the other hand when I try to install that again, I get to this message: "tree ver 0.00 has already installed, do you want to install it to tree ver 0.00?"
But even when I reinstall that again I cannot see that in settings>general>personalisation>themes>general.
How can I solve this problem!?
    Best Regards.
  • zach · 2 years ago
Hey freedom - are you sure that the theme you are trying to install is compatible with S60 3rd? Do other themes install ok?
  • eks_are · 1 year ago
for theme that installed in phone memory and cannot remove using app. manager...try using this method...first install the same theme u want to remove into memory card...then uninstall it back...its work for my nokia 5700...
  • zach · 1 year ago
Very interesting @eks_are - usually a theme won't install again until the original installation is removed.

  • Alireza · 1 year ago
    HI
OMH New prob here :S my theme applied getting off and going back to nokia theme when i switch off and on my E65
  • zach · 1 year ago
Sounds like a bad MMC or dirty contacts. Try cleaning off your MMC contacts and hitting the card reader in your phone with some canned air.
  • Alireza · 1 year ago
:O what ?? what do you mean zach ?:)
  • zach · 1 year ago
    lol :)

My guess is that your themes are installed on your memory card (MMC) and the fact that they are automatically switching back to the default theme might mean that there is a problem with your MMC. It could also mean that the MMC contacts (little copper pieces on the tip) or the copper contacts inside your phone that touch the MMC contacts are dirty. You should try cleaning them with something like canned air.

If that doesn't work, apply a different theme that is installed on your phone memory and not your MMC. Does the same thing happen?
  • Jcl · 1 year ago
    Hi Zach,

Thank you for sharing this solution. I managed to uninstall the unwanted themes from my Nokia e65 with great success.
  • Alireza · 1 year ago
    Hi Zach

My green key (answer key) of E65 does not work more than 6-7 time after reset / i mean when i push that on a phone number in contacts does not make a call .:S and some time my phone switch off by itself :S :((( .
  • zach · 1 year ago
It sounds like you've got some hardware issues Alireza. You should definitely talk to the distributor you purchased your phone from.
  • Alireza · 1 year ago
i think thats for battery contact with phone .
  • Alireza · 1 year ago
and stop working of answer key happening for some dude too ( he got E65 too ) then thats not hardware prob.. right ?
  • Peter · 1 year ago
Hi, this my problem is somehow conected to this forum.
On E65 i have a preinstaled Adobe reader LE, which worked before. Now it won't work (say Application closed user11).
When i try to uninstall it from phone, there is no entrance in Appl. manager and any uninstal option in folder options.
When i tried to reinstal this LE Reader, the phone says that Application is already instaled.

    What to do?

    thanks
    Peter
  • zach · 1 year ago
I think your only option (if you want to use reader again) is to back up all of your data and hard-reset your phone. :(
  • Sue · 1 year ago
My N95 sometimes turns off (fades off) just as I answer a call. Also, if I move it or touch it, it often makes beeps that only I can hear during a call. Also "answer any key" answers the phone even if I only pick it up. I tried a firmware update. Sometimes it says no service (no bars) when minutes before or after I have full signal strength in same area. (I dropped it once.) Any ideas? Too late to return it.

Hi, i did not save the themes on a memory card, but the phone memory and I tried to follow the instructions you gave to some one else but I couldn't even find 'Tools'(probably because I have every thing in italian). I am not an expert with mobiles but I would be immensly grateful if you could explane me how to remove these themes.
  • Zach · 1 year ago
@Tiz If the themes are installed to your phone memory, you can install them from your App Manager.
  • Jeff7715 · 1 year ago
When you some folders, the name of the theme can not be determined. Please tell me how to view these themes on my PC monitor instead of opening all the folders.
    Thanks

If I Delete A Theme... I Can\\\'t Install It Anymore On The PHONE:(
  • Zach · 1 year ago
Now you have to go back to the guide in the last post you commented on if you want to reinstall them.
  • Robinjives · 1 year ago
    Hi Zach,
I have been reading this post with interest maybe you can help me out. I have the same theme problem as everyone else (not visible in the application manager) but I have the additional problem that I cannot connect in Data Transfer mode with my cable - I get the message that some application is using mass storage and I have no idea which one, I generally install all applications in Mass storage - even the Themes.

I tried accessing the E: as the mass storage is called via Bluetooth but I am unable to see the hidden folder there.

I would be real helpful if you can help me with those 2 problems - Themes and not able to connect in mass storage mode.
  • Zach · 1 year ago
Try this Robinjives - Turn your phone off. Connect the USB cable and then power your phone on. The PC should be detected early in the boot process and then you can choose mass storage mode before most of your apps begin to launch.

Hi. I downloaded few themes from mobile9 on my PC and then I instaled them on my phone. I don\'t like two of them and I can\'t delete them. :( I have nokia N95. Please help!
  • Zach · 1 year ago
If you installed them on your phone memory then they should be visible in your App Manager and they can be removed from there. If they're on your memory card, did you try the guide above? What exactly went wrong?
  • vale · 1 year ago
well, I instaled them and when I saw i couldn't just delet them (push C) I tried to find them anywhere(PC Suite) I read half of what you wrote but I can't understand much. What is mass storage mode? (yeah, I'm kinda stupid)
  • vale · 1 year ago
Oh and what is that app manager. I don't really know much about phones (I use them to listen to music, talk and take pictures T_T)
  • vale · 1 year ago
Oh yeah, I instaled them on my phone memory.(Sorry forgot to write that)
  • Zach · 1 year ago
No problem vale. Instructions vary a bit depending on the phone you have, but check the Applications or Tools folders for "App. Manager" or "App. Mgr". It may take a few seconds to load but once it does you can scroll down to find the themes you'd like to remove. Highlight a theme, press the left softkey and choose Remove. You're all set.
  • vale · 1 year ago
OMG It works. Thank you. <3 Ur some kind of phone genius.
  • Alvin · 1 year ago
You never explain why you cannot delete the folder containing the files of the theme you want to delete. Since each theme has its own folder, I actually deleted the unwanted folder. I did not find any problems and hence I want to know why you said that we cannot delete any folders.
  • Zach · 1 year ago
On some handsets, deleting the entire folder will ensure that each subsequent theme installed to the MMC will not appear in App Mgr. I'm not sure why, but I know at least the N80 and E61i were like that for me...

    Hi zach

my problem is whenever i choose the 'data transfer mode' there's a warning 'memory card is used by other apps'.

I've formatted the phone, and the 'data tranfer mode' going well until i removed the unwanted theme from the '\private\10207114\import'. The 'data transfer mode' won't work again. I haven't installed other application, only removing the theme :(

    Thx

Hi Zach I have learn alot already from you there's one problem I have with my Nokia E65 maybe I missed it here on the site though but I have been deleting themes manually from the private folder. and now I want to install themes and the phone says "unable to install" so I thought I deleted the complete private folder but I didn't.
I installed uNsIs on my pc and when I extract a theme and place it in the private folder, the theme works. I just can't install them by double clicking it anymore. Is there maybe something else I could have deleted accidently? Thank you for your time
    John
  • Zach · 1 year ago
Thanks for the kind words John. Does the error occur when you try to install to both the phone memory and the MMC?
  • John · 1 year ago
You're welcome Zach thanks for your fast reply:)
Yes I get the error with both. But I just tried a new theme that has never been on my phone before and that worked fine. When I want to install one that has been on there before, it doesnt say anything about overwrite it.
  • Zach · 1 year ago
Ahh I see John. Unfortunately once you've used this method to uninstall a theme, it can only be reinstalled to the MMC using unsis. You won't be able to reinstall it to the phone memory as your handset thinks that the theme is already there. The only way around this unfortunately, is to format your phone and MMC. :(
  • John · 1 year ago
    Hi Zach
I made a backup of my phone and doesn't have much else on there but except TomTom navigation software and thinking about an old theme installing with Unsis or a complete format I think I will use the help of unsis instead hehehe:) And funny enough I just manage to install an older one that I deleted before maybe just luck or my phone beeing freaky.. maybe in a weird mood I format it anyways though we always say we don't care but yet we keep thinking about it :D
thank you for your help Zach and have a great weekend:)

    _John
  • Zach · 1 year ago
Yeah formatting is always the last resort - especaially for someone like me with tons of apps that would need to be reinstalled. Better to just use unsis... ;)

most of n82 are made in china..and most of it are not so legit..
    i have a n82 made from china..
and i got a problem..i dunno how to install or uninstall a themes..
yes.i saw the guide that they've post here..
but the file that i need doesnt show up..
i already tried to search it..
    what should i do..??
  • Zach · 1 year ago
Unfortunately if you have a fake N82 then I'm not sure I can help you. Are you sure it's fake? What OS does it run? If you were able to install S60 themes then it's definitely not a fake. If you installed the themes to your MMC, connect to your PC in File Transfer mode and have a look in the skins folder.
  • Fawn · 1 year ago
Thanks for the info. I have an N75 and some of the themes were stored on my memory card. It was driving me nuts because I couldn't find a way to delete them. Thanks for ending my frustrations!

  • Zach · 1 year ago
You should be able to open the App Manager and see your themes listed there. Just highlight the theme in question and press the clear button.
  • karla · 1 year ago
i cant find the "private folder"..im connecting my device in my pc,,and i clicked data transfer..is that ryt??
  • karla · 1 year ago
how can i turn my device into mass storage mode?..hehe
  • Abul · 1 year ago
You need to go into the USB settings mode and change to Mass Storage or prompt on connection. Tools > Connections > Settings > USB >
  • Zach · 1 year ago
Right. And if you have a newer phone, please make note of the last
    thing mentioned in the post:

"Note that in newer devices, theme folders/files are located in two
    different directories: [!:\private\10207114\import] and
[!:\resource\skins] - delete the like-named folders from each
    directory to remove themes."
  • VDIAS · 1 year ago
And if my theme is installed on the phone memory???
  • Zach · 1 year ago
Then it should be visible in App Manager. Just highlight the theme and
    press the Clear key.
