Symbian in Motion: TYScrSaver by the3sky

• Jeb · 2 years ago
I have tried to instal this to my E61 and am not able to. Is it compatable with the E61? If it is,it keeps saying that the certificate is not valid or something similar. Do I need to sign it myself or something like that? I was reading about that in here. If I do need to sign it, is it a long process? Thanks for your help.
Jeb
• zach · 2 years ago
Hey Jeb, thanks for your comment. It is compatible with your phone and you are correct that this app must first be signed before you install it. Check the first paragraph under the last picture above and you'll find a link to a guide. It looks complicated but if you take it slow and go step by step it's actually quite simple. Thanks :)
• Jeb · 2 years ago
Ok, never mind I reread your post and see that I have to sign the app. Can anyone sign it for an E61 or E61i and then share it with everyone else that has the same phone or does each phone have to have it's own signed version?
• zach · 2 years ago
Because of the security process used on the S60 3rd platform, the only way to give an app an open certificate is for the original author to submit it to Symbian Signed for testing and approval.

The method described by the linked guide gives the app a 6-month development certificate that is designed to be used by the developer so that he/she can install the app and test it on an S60 3rd device. As you will see, each dev cert can be valid only for one IMEI.

We use it differently though, as a way to bypass the Symbian Singed process so that we can install apps created by developers who do not want to pay for this service, or wait for (up to) months and months to have their app approved and signed as freeware.

This also means that you should be careful of what you sign and install though! Make sure that any unsigned apps that you are signing have come from a reputable source to avoid any malware (although nothing has been OFFICIALLY reported as S60 3rd malware yet, I have my suspicions about one app that I came across a while ago).
• Jeb · 2 years ago
Zach,
Thaks so much for the input. I would love to try this app but I honestly don't have any spare time to start messing with this. Maybe S60 will sign it and I will then be able to use it.
• David · 2 years ago
I signed and installed this on my E61 and I like it alot. One odd thing, however, is that the clock, etc. is just slightly off the top of the screen. I am not able to read the "keylock" text above the bluetooth button in your first picture above. It also moves up and down slightly (like 2-4 pixels) instead of moving up and down the whole screen like the "date and time" saver does. Any ideas?
• zach · 2 years ago
Hey David, odds are that you're using an MBM file created for a different screen resolution. Try checking out the other MBM files and see how they look.
• David · 2 years ago
I'm using TY1_2, which is the only one which seemed like it matched your picture above. Is that the MBM you were using for the above screenshots on your E61i? The E61 and E61i have the same screen resolution, don't they (320x240)?
• zach · 2 years ago
You are correct that they do have the same resolution. That MBM file is actually made for a 240x320 screen though so it will get cut off from time to time (the image moves slightly every 5 minutes).
• Hussein Jodiyawalla · 2 years ago
I'm having the same problem as David here on my E61. I love this app, but the top of TY1_2 is chopped off and it hardly ever seems to move down enough. I used MBM Wizard to extract the image files and the background is 300x131 which should in theory be ideal for 320x240 and NOT for 240x320. Its a puzzle.
• zach · 2 years ago
Very odd. If I have time to play with it at some point I'll try moving all of the graphics to the bottom of the image but I'm not sure what else could be done...
• Hussein Jodiyawalla · 2 years ago
TY1_4 (which is 194x90 size) works fine though. Its better than the default blue bar! If I get some time I'm gonna have fun making some of my own I think.
• zach · 2 years ago
Awesome Hussein - please do post links if you create some screen savers of your own! I'll do the same if I can find the time (and figure it out!). :)
• Mr G · 2 years ago
Let me give this signing bizniz a go then!
• Mr G · 2 years ago
Sh*t man,i done it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
• David · 2 years ago
Yeah, I picked apart the MBM as well, It appears that the app doesn't correctly understand the size of the E61's screen (though it seems to work fine with the E61i). Even TY1_4, which appears to work, never travels to the lower portion of the screen. it's almost as though it thinks the screen is 320x120, the with TY1_2 since the image is 300x131 it almost always is pushed off the screen. I even tried resizing the images, but it didn't really help. I'm currently running a version of TY1_2 with a 320x131 image. now it only travels up and down, but it is still chopping off the upper portion most of the time.
• David · 2 years ago
oh, I also tried with a 320x240 image and it was pushed COMPLETELY off the screen most of the time. that wasn't what i expected. it did occasionally come down a little. I'm thinking the E61's firmware (I've got the latest) doesn't interact well with this app. i still like it way better than the blue bar.
• zach · 2 years ago
lol Mr G, good job :)

@David

It is odd. I've found that TY1_1 works best on my E61i as does the one in the last picture above (TY1_4 maybe). The file that is pictured above in the first picture also gets cut off on my phone.

Have you tried using a 320x 240 (or smaller) background and placing the images at the very bottom of the screen?
• zach · 2 years ago
Follow up: Just FYI - I did some digging and you're definitely correct about the app having a miscue with regards to the true resolution of the E61/E61i screen. Anyone know enough Chinese to contact the developer? :)

For the time being, use an overall resolution of 320x87 for your MBMs and I think you'll be happy with the result.
• zach · 2 years ago

Well I started playing with MBMWizard and made my first creation - which actually isn't my creation at all. :)

My favorite screen saver so far is one that came with the app. It has two little red brackets that surround the am/pm but the one on the right was whited out for some reason. I tried to recreate it as seen below (it looks much better on the screen).

You can download it here. The image is 320x87 so it should work fine on the E61/E61i/E62 and anything with a 352x416 screen (N80/E70/etc).

• Juan · 2 years ago
In any way is possible to change the languaje for the day of the Week? (example, Monday to Lunes, etc.) Odd that my phone is configured for spanish, but some of the skins show in English, others in chinese and one in italian???
Regards,
• zach · 2 years ago
The day indications that you see in the different MBM files are actually pictures embedded within the MBM file itself and cannot be translated. The only way to get any of the screen savers to display the day in Spanish is to edit the MBM file as described in the included guide.
• Juan · 2 years ago
Thanks Zach, yep, I discovered. I will upload the mbm files in spanish as soon as I finished them.
• zach · 2 years ago
Gracias amigo! :)
• Mr G · 2 years ago
Can you resize your mbm file so i can use it on my N95?

Thanks in advance
• JonnyBruha · 2 years ago
This screensaver looks awesome, but how bad is it going to kill my N95's tiny battery?
• malaeum · 2 years ago
@JonnyBruha

While I have yet to do any sort of extensive testing on this I can't imagine this having much impact. I know the N95 is squeezed for power as it is, but I would think this would work just fine. Most screensavers that suck battery are using alot of power to draw something "pretty". That takes processing power to do, this shouldn't draw anymore than the default screensaver seeing as how it prety much uses the exact same resources (a bit more ram though, but the power draw created by memory is pretty small compared to processing).

HTH
• zach · 2 years ago
Yeah, malaeum is definitely right but the problem is that pretty much any screen saver won't play very nicely with the N95. You can give it a whirl but I don't expect this app to have a very long life on your N95 unfortunately. :(
• Kibou · 2 years ago
I also tried to fix the problem with TY1_2, but I haven't got it yet. Is some execpt me, working on this problem? Or have someone already a fixed mbm?
• zach · 2 years ago
I haven't looked at that one yet myself but maybe later today I will. What size display are you trying to get it to work on?
• Kibou · 2 years ago
Sorry zach, but I enjoyed the very good weather outside. Well, I almost got it. I added to nearly every particular pic of the screensaver about 60px in the top of it, but the digits. That way I tried to relocat the screensaver.

http://home.arcor.de/hack4life/1_2-modi.mbm
• zach · 2 years ago
OK cool Kibou - I'll check it out right now. :)
• zach · 2 years ago
Weird! In the preview, the image was much lower (bottom was cut off) but once the screen saver enable it was even more cut off than the original! I could only see the day and the rest was cut off...

??

hmmm... I think it must simply be a matter of the app not recognizing the actual rez of landscape devices...
• Kibou · 2 years ago
Really strange. Someone should learn chinese and inform the developers about this problem =)
• zach · 2 years ago
[Zach types "Chinese for dummies" in google...]

;)
• David · 2 years ago
Sorry I disappeared for a while... I need to be able subscribe to a thread or it leaves my addled brain. The E61 definitely seems to confuse to app. I'll have to cut down the size of TY1_2 (its my favorite by far) to see how it looks. TY1_4 does seem to stay mostly on the screen.

@Kibou : your mbm works both better and worse for me. There are times where it gets down a decent bit on the screen so I can see everything. But other times it is further off the screen than the original.
• zach · 2 years ago
Yeah David, I have to figure out how to enable RSS for comments...

Looking forward to the resized TY1_2 you're working on! That is one of my favs but it just won't play nice on my 320x240 screen.
• David · 2 years ago
Did anyone happen to find the very first theme pictured in this post for a 240 * 320 device (N95)?
• John · 2 years ago
I'm currently using TY1_4 byt I'd love (I mean LOVE) to have a version of TY1_2 that works on an E62... If someone isn't working on it already, could someone post what tools I need to get to modify the mbm file?

Thanks.
• zach · 2 years ago
@David

The theme you're asking about is called Jet Black.

@John

I think some people are working on it but there seems to be a bug in the app that prevents some sizes from playing nice with 320x240 displays. If you want to play with it yourself, all you need is MBMWizard which is linked in the original post above.
• oracle · 2 years ago
anybody can help me signed the TY ScrSaver sis file and forward those to me... really appreciate... tq
• zach · 2 years ago
@David

Not sure if you're still reading this but I've (finally!) figured out that you can subscribe to a comments feed here on my blog by adding "?feed=comments-rss2" to the end of the URL of the post page. So for this post, it would be:

http://news.mobile9.com/s60apps/2007/06/06/tyscrsaver-by-the3sky/?feed=commen
ts-rss2

Now I just have to figure out how to automatically provide that link when you click the feed icon in the address bar... :)
• bRaS · 2 years ago
I am dying to get this screensaver running on my e61i. However syymbian signed is not letting any new emmbers sign up.

Can anyone sent me the dev cert request tool or better the signed TY screensaver SIS file.

really really appreciated if somebody could reach out all

not working on my nokia E65... preview looks fine but the screensaver doesn't start.
• Wally · 2 years ago
Hi everyone!
I have an issue on my Nokia E50 ... if I aktivate the screensaver it firstly works fine, but all of a sudden it falls back to the default screensaver. Till now i have not figured out which event causes the TYScrSaver to disable itself. Its crazy - please help me!
• Harvey · 2 years ago
@frombe Hi, It works fine on my E65, have gone in to edit under your current theme and changed the power saver to TYScrSaver?

@all - does anyone know which MBM is used in the very first example and is there a 320x240(E65) version?
• zach · 2 years ago
Hey Harvey, I don't recall the exact name of that one but it's included in the download archive and should work ok on the E65.
• Wally · 2 years ago
Hi @all, I posted the issue with the default screensaver and it looks like the setting got lost on my E50 when I activate the key lock - ANY IDEA ???
• zach · 2 years ago
Hey Wally - What app are you using to lock your keypad? Let me know and I'll see if I can duplicate the problem.
• Wally · 2 years ago
@Zach,
I can use the mLock application or I can use the usual key lock option via the power button. After enabling the key lock the chance is quit high that not the TYScrSaver is displayed but the default date'n'time one. After changing the setting and resetting in the theme dialog it displays the TYScrSaver again.
• zach · 2 years ago
OK I'll give it a try as soon as I have some time but you might want to uninstall/reinstall both apps and see how that goes.
• hiutopor · 2 years ago
Hi all!

Very interesting information! Thanks!

G'night
• Rocha · 2 years ago
Great site! Sort of stumbled upon it over the weekend and have been coming back ever since.
Finally got the certificate signed (after several tries) and was well worth the, uh, wait.
Anyways, as with most of the above comments, I'm wondering if anybobody's come up a readjusted TY1_2 for E61i?
• zach · 2 years ago
Thanks for the comment Rocha and I'm glad you got your signing issues sorted out. As for the TY1_2 file, I never got a chance to edit it myself. Perhaps someone else will pop in with some good news. The only one I edited can be seen above in the comments and it should work fine on the E61i. :)
• Bo · 2 years ago
Followed the instruction and when I click on BAT file it blinks for a second but it doesn't create a signed file. Any ideas how to fix this issues. Thanks a lot!
• zach · 2 years ago
Odds are you've either got a typo in the bat file or you don't have all of the files in the same folder. Give it a quick look over and let me know if you still have troubles.
• Bo · 2 years ago
Looked over the bat file and it looks good. All the files are in the folder, so I am not sure what else might be wrong. I saw few other posts on the web with the same problem, but no solution.
• zach · 2 years ago
I'm really not sure what else the problem could be. It might be a good idea to check over the Sybian Signed sight - maybe there's a Windows component you're missing that is needed (.NET 2.0 or something)?

Whenever what you describe has happened to me it has always been due to a typo in the bat file...
• Bo · 2 years ago
Got it to work finally. Started from scratch
Thanks
• Bo · 2 years ago
Another question...the screensaver doesn't show if if there is an e-mail in the mailbox. The standard Nokia blue bar had '@sign' if there is something in the inbox. Any way of setting something like that with this screensaver?
Thanks
• Wally · 2 years ago
@ Zach

Hi back again ... I have tried to install and uninstall the screensaver (and mlock) several time but no success. The same happens even if no mlock is installed - using the keylock feature of my E50 breaks the screensaver.

Please help - I realy like the screensaver and don't wanna lose it ...
• zach · 2 years ago
@Bo You're correct that this screensaver does not support email notifications. Perhaps Remind Me could assist if you really like this app but need to be notified of new emails right away.

@Wally I'm really sorry that you're still having troubles and that I haven't been able to help. The problem is that I just can't reproduce your error.

Why don't you try some alternative locking apps - Mr. Lock is a good freeware option for example. See if that helps at all.
• Bo · 2 years ago
Another thing that I noticed is that once you select a profile other than 'normal', the screensaver completely disappears, and doesn't come back until you restart the phone.
• zach · 2 years ago
I've never experienced that one either. Have you tried different image files or just one? It might just be that it's not going to play nicely with your phone... :(
• Jules · 1 year ago
First of all, great job!

The program looks wicked and I tried installing it on my e61i but as expected the app had to be signed. Anyways the signing process seems complicated so I wasn't able to install this great app. Anyways, great site and good find!
• zach · 1 year ago
Thanks for the kind words Jules. The signing process was a PIA at first but with apps like SignME! available now, it's not so bad anymore. Have a look! :)
• vidoublex · 4 months ago
try..
• mwesson1 · 2 months ago
Hi,
I installed TYScrsaver and it's all working fine, but the I cannot open the settings ini file/folder! When I try to open it on my N95 8GB it says "unable to open file, file not supported"!
• baby shower cakes · 1 month ago
If the last few sentences meant nothing to you, then allow me to explain. TYScrSaver reads an MBM file (located in the C:\Data\TYScrSaver directory by default) to pull the graphics that make up the screen saver that is displayed.
