Symbian in Motion: Y-Tasks by Dr Jukka

  • Hardeep · 2 years ago
Just one word for this app - MINDBLOWING :)

Can't wait to get my hands on this one!! Y-Browser is already my Fav. Most useful features of this suite for me have to be FileTypes, CrashMonitor & Trace
  • olly · 2 years ago
God this is an amazing effort, and freeware to boot! Y-Browser is already one of my favorite apps, and this looks like the perfect companion to it!

    Nice review Zach!

can´t download the software! not available on the author´s site :S
can u post it for download please?
    thanx
  • zach · 2 years ago
Thanks guys, it is a great app and the fact that it's free makes it invaluable!

    @tribas

As per the post above, the app will be available publically on Saturday to coincide with the launch of Jukka's site. Hold tight, almost there!

the man is a master, one of the best apps i´ve seen for 9.1

Finally a decent utility for the series 60 phone. Power to the people. I was waiting for this in a long time. It gives some ability to decide what your phone should or shouldn't do.

Zach, in the filetype parts can I change the handling of http so I can use *Web* instead of *Services* for links?

A great app! Can't wait to use it!
  • zach · 2 years ago
I want to say yes, but I have to play with it a bit more. There are many entries that have Services set as the default to open them so I imagine changing those to Web would work just fine. :)
  • olly · 2 years ago
"Zach, in the filetype parts can I change the handling of http so I can use *Web* instead of *Services* for links?

A great app! Can’t wait to use it!"

Ricardo, I didn't even think of that, but if it was possible to do that, then this would be my all time favorite app for that functionality alone. I HATE the services browser... especially with blackberry email on my e61i (which automatically calls the services browser for every link).

  • zach · 2 years ago
There are a whole bunch of entries mapped to Services that I can change to Web so I'm pretty sure that it will work just fine. I can't find anything on my phone right now that will open the Services browser to try it out. :( We'll know in a day though!

One note though - and that's that the Web browser isn't compatible with wap sites - so remapping certain links may interfere with OTA downloads and other things. Nothing that popping back into Y-Tasks won't be able to fix though - there's even a nice little option to restore all default mapping... :)
  • Tuomas · 2 years ago
In the Filetypes is it possible to change the default calendar, i.e. if I click on the active standby screen on an appointment the phone would open Papyrus instead of the default calendar app?
  • Ricardo · 2 years ago
    @zach: I guess I will find out tomorrow :)

@olly: For BBConnect (for me it only works in BBConnect): highlight the link and hit Ctrl+C, open Web and paste the location there
  • zach · 2 years ago
    @Tuomas

As awesome as that would be, unfortunately it's not possible right now in Y-Tasks. Just to make sure though I did remap two calendar-related entries to Papyrus (with normal and max priority) and no luck. :(
  • vebmetal · 2 years ago
Somehow I don't get a 'Map to new app.' option. What's happening here?
  • vebmetal · 2 years ago
^ This is a screenshot of what I get:

  • zach · 2 years ago
Hmmmmmm... Can anyone else confirm this. I haven't installed the version posted on drjukka.com but all of the files look the same as what I have.
  • Dr. Jukka · 2 years ago
Basically the file mapping requires Read/WriteDevice data, thus it can not be include din a self-signed application, and the actual functionality comes with the main server module, which you need to sign with valid developer certificate...

so visit www.symbiansigned.com and get one, its a bit tricky at the moment, since they are a bit down in there, but send the email and they'll be back as soon as they can (for me it took 24 hours for last query I sent to them)

    -jukka-
  • vebmetal · 2 years ago
Ok, I hav eno idea what all that means!!! So does this mean that this functionality is only limited to advanced users?
  • zach · 2 years ago
:) It means that if you want to take advantage of all of this app's functionality, you'll have to open an account at symbiansigned.com, email them to request a cert, hope that they reply, and then follow the guide that I've linked in many of my posts to sign the app.
  • pete · 2 years ago
So the plugins install without me having to sign them, but there's no visible icon for the app... do I *have* to sign the 'mainserver' component? Is that the core component needed for the app to actually run?

    -Pete
  • Dr. Jukka · 2 years ago
sort-of... Basically you can install other modules without signing, you can run then and use them normally, but some functionalities are missing unless you also install the main server..

which indeed won't run or even install without proper certificate..

    -jukka-
  • karmacoma · 2 years ago
I have signed the main app and installed the plugins. All but file types i working well. I even signed "file types" but it can´t changed anything, the option is not there in the menu. Same as vebmetal gets. I downloaded from dr.jukkas site. Woul love to have it working! It´s a great app.
  • zach · 2 years ago
Very odd indeed... I'll wait for Jukka to comment on this.
  • Jay · 2 years ago
Great application! by the way which theme was used in the Y-Task Screenshots, and where can i get it from?
  • zach · 2 years ago
Hi Jay :) That is a commercial theme called SeaFoam.
  • Jay · 2 years ago
orite, thanks alot, so is there any way of getting hold of it?
  • zach · 2 years ago
Only at the link provided I'm afraid. Well, that and the handango partner sites...
  • Jay · 2 years ago
shame, o so its just like the psiloc reflect theme!!, anyway thanks again
  • Burcrim · 2 years ago
I've remapped the seven items all listed as opening with "Services" to "Web" and it made no difference, links in messages etc still open in Services.

Anyone managed to make them now open in Web instead?
  • sopheak · 2 years ago
    i want your software
  • zach · 2 years ago
There is a download link in the first paragraph of the post above. :)
  • skipper · 2 years ago
hello, where can I find the theme used in this page?

    Hello & very compls!

    skp
  • zach · 2 years ago
Hey skipper, the theme pictured in the review is called SeaFoam. I'm using the landscape version, but there's another version for portrait displays.
  • Dr. Jukka · 2 years ago
sorry about late reply, this is still for the signng issues with filetypes.. Basically the part you need to sign is the Y-Tasks plug-in: Main server, unsigned version 050, which is below all other stuff in the page. Not the main application.

Its also the only module that has word "unsigned" as pasrt of the filename. hope this clears it out..

can it delete the camera tones in nokia n95? if yes which file to delete?
  • zach · 2 years ago
No, the camera tones are protected. The only way to silence them is to change your product code and flash to firmware that disables them in vibrate/silent mode.
  • MC · 2 years ago
    Dr Jukka,

Basically I have a feedback for Y Tasks version 0.50 (english).

When I am in the main menu of Y Tasks, i.e. before you open Trace, File types, Memory status & etc. There is a "scrolling bar" at right hand side. The bar overlaps with the plug-in next to the bar if the plug-in is highlighted.

Then, press the UP key now, the bar disappears.
  • Dr. Jukka · 2 years ago
Jep, seen that, it appears that the automatic scrollbar thing with grids is not working as I though it would work really, I'll look into it and see if I should set it off, and only to automatic when there are actually enough icons to really need it.
  • taz · 2 years ago

I installed Y-Task just now, Very good !
The purpose I use Y-Task is that I hope to replace "Handytaskman" and "BestTaskman", which both of them are commercial software.
Otherwise, I found that Y-Task seems can't be call-out by press&hold the MENU key ?

Because I frequently use the built-in SIP client and Web browser..etc, all of them are RAM-Sacker. So I have to frequently check out how much RAM left current and then decide to open/close some of them. To accomplish that, press-hold the MENU key is the efficientest way.
Wish Y-Task can implement this feature :)
Again, thank you so much that offers us such an excellent & free software !
  • zach · 2 years ago
That would in fact be a great addition to this app mebanna, thanks for the comment!

In the meantime though, have you thought about adding Y-Tasks to your Active Standby or assigning a hotkey shortcut to Y-Tasks using NStarter? This would enable you to call the app very quickly and easily.
  • Milos · 2 years ago
Please somebody tell me how exactly to contact www.symbiansigned.com and request the certificate?
I tried via symbiansigned@symbian.com, but this addredss is closed.
  • Milos · 2 years ago
I've signed Main Server .sis file, and used FileTypes to assign all internet related files to the Web browser, but links still open in the Services browser.

first, thank for you tutorial! what do i do exactly when i 'compress RAM? will my symbian be faster? thank you
  • Zach · 1 year ago
I doubt it will have much affect on free RAM and it surely won't make
your phone any faster. In theory it looks for and repairs memory leaks
but I don't think he ever got it working unfortunately...
  • Gong · 10 months ago
it doesn't work on my N70, but maybe I'm just unable /rookie...
    Thank you anyway!

my former task manager did not work on s60 5, I cannot stay without a task manager.. this one is very good, it works on 5, and it's much better, lots of functions, easy to operate, I love it,
author seems to me very skilled in symbian coding (I also love his clock screensaver, nearly perfect just the haptic switchoff delay to cut)
thanks I'll bookmark your site !
